Furthermore the reasons for the existence of the taboo are the following:
1. There is the ever-present and inescapable danger of the girl’s becoming pregnant.
2. There is the probability of catching venereal disease.
3. The girl may acquire a bad reputation.
4. Sex is likely to be cheapened in the eyes of the other person (sexual partner).
5. There is often little opportunity for adequate sexual education on the part of the girl and the boy. This is because sex talk is still considered as a taboo topic in many household.
Generally, Filipino parents are opposed to premarital sexual relationship even during the period of engagement. However, due to the growing independence of young Filipinos from the mores of their parents, intimacies in the relationship between young men and young women are covertly practiced even before the altar date. There was a time in the history of the Filipinos when a simple kiss was interpreted to mean a proposal for marriage. Today, in the urban and rural areas of the country, kissing has become an ordinary practice.
